Swimming to Alcatraz for Childhood Cancer

On June 1st, undergraduate brother Luke Newman-Silva swam from Alcatraz to San Francisco through shark-infested waters to raise money for the fight against pediatric cancer.

The 1.25-mile swim was presented by The POETIC Foundation and Water World Swim, with the proceeds and donations benefiting POETIC’s mission to cure childhood cancer.

This year, 95 participants braved the sea to make the swim, and collectively they raised more than $25,000 for pediatric cancer research.

Luke and the other participants began the swim near Alcatraz Island and swam all the way across the San Francisco Bay to Aquatic Park. The swim was not timed, and swimmers of all ability levels were welcomed.

Congratulations Luke on this remarkable accomplishment—Pi Kapp is proud!
